How to Play & Trivia
A piano piece shaped by its own directions
Gnossienne No. 1 is among Erik Satie’s most recognizable piano works. Its 1913 source edition does not rely on a standard tempo label alone: it also prints changing French cues such as “Du bout de la pensée” and “Pas à pas.” These brief phrases give the performer room to shape the flow instead of treating every line as a fixed, even pulse.
Listen and practice
Follow the melody through its repeated figures and give each phrase time to settle before the next one begins. The complete MIDI lasts 3 minutes and 17 seconds and contains 832 notes across two piano parts. Slower playback can help reveal the shifts in contour without losing the piece’s floating character.
