Description & Musical Analysis
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 begins with four sharply repeated notes; this piano reduction follows the first movement through its urgent C-minor argument.
How to Play & Trivia
The four-note idea, expanded
Beethoven’s short-short-short-long opening turns a compact rhythmic figure into the engine of the first movement. The idea returns in changing registers and textures, linking forceful chords with more agile passages. This page presents the movement as a piano reduction, so both orchestral lines can be followed at one keyboard.
First movement in piano reduction
The MIDI runs for about 4 minutes and 41 seconds and contains 4,223 note events across two hand-separated piano parts. It covers the first movement, “Allegro con brio,” in C minor; the remaining movements of the symphony are not included in this file. Use the score to track the opening rhythm as it moves between the hands and through the movement’s contrasting sections.
